Photo Assignment: Environmental/ Personality Portrait

Leah Rees, 24, is one of the many part owners at The Alternative Library in downtown Bellingham. The Alternative library is a cooperative that not only loans out books to people, but also promotes creativity and collaboration in the art community. Tuesday afternoon, the place is empty but a few of the owners are lounging around talking about future art shows they want to host. Leah says her favorite part of the library is all of the art collaborations that happen. “Being in this environment has gotten me out of my year and a half painting break,” Leah says, “It’s awesome using others creativity to inspire your own creativity.”

Photo Assignment: Ice Breaker

As my first assignment in my photojournalism class with little experience, I was asked to go out in the community and find 6 random strangers and ask the question "What would you rather be doing right now?" I took their picture and this was a just three of the finished pictures.

Joe and Crew Rogers, 53 and 2
Sitting at a table fit for a small child, Joe was enjoying a food court dinner with his son, Crew. “What would I rather be doing? Truly nothing. I’m with my only child and we love spending time together,” Joe said. Crew joined in, pulling on his dad’s arm and said “The trains daddy. I want to be with the trains.”

Bell Walters, 20

Leaving her apartment after a day of class, Bell Walters had a hula-hoop in hand, ready to keep the day going. “I’m not sure what I rather be doing. Maybe just frolicking in a forest because I love to be outdoors and as you can see, hooping.” Bell said. Bell tells me she enjoys hoop dancing in her apartment as her daily workout. “I do it everyday and my roommate think it’s the coolest thing to watch.” Bell said.

Ravel Boyce, 22
Ravel said he could tell this was going to be a weird request when I came up to him holding camera but didn’t mind me snapping a few pictures. After taking a customer’s order, Ravel answered the question, what would you rather be doing right now? “I guess I rather be reading or gardening.” Ravel said, “That’s what I really love. Two relaxing thing that are way better then working.”

(Boyce was my picture I include to show and talk about what I did wrong at the class critique)
